3 useful ideas on how you can recycle your old sofa covers

25th May 2022

We’re becoming way more eco-friendly as a society. In the last 20 years alone, we’ve made massive strides in the battle against climate change, and nowadays, a lot of people are desperate to find out ways in which they can reduce their everyday waste.

As a result of all this, recycling has now become a huge part of modern day life. Whether it’s cars, electrical goods, clothes, or furniture covers, the general idea is the same across the board – reduce, re-use, recycle. So, if you’re thinking of indulging in a new set of our luxurious sofa and chair covers, you might be thinking about the ways in which you can put your old ones to good use. Well, there’s more than one option!

Recycle

This is probably the most obvious option, but it’s a good one all the same. If you weren’t already aware, you’re not really supposed to put any sort of fabric or material in your recycling bin at home. Instead, check with your local council whether they collect and recycle old sofa covers and other textiles. Or, check online to see if you’ve got a textile bank in your local area, and you might be able to get some cash for them!

Reuse

If your covers are still in good condition, you can always clean them up and put them in a vacuum bag as a spare set. If you’re set on getting rid of them though, there are plenty of options out there for you to consider in regards to selling them. With multiple social media marketplaces, ‘swap and sell’ groups, and second hand selling apps at your disposal, there’s no shortage of options when it comes to methods of selling your old sofa covers.

Alternatively, you could donate your old sofa covers to your local high school – most schools have a textiles department for home economics lessons, and they’re always in need of materials to work with! As a third option, consider seeking out any local artists who specialise in working with textiles. Much like the schools, they’re always looking to get their hands on materials that they can use to create new pieces, and a unique set of sofa covers is sure to be an attractive prospect.

Re-purpose

Perhaps you’re creatively inclined yourself! Old sofa covers provide a variety of options for craft ideas, no matter their condition. There are plenty of ways you can make good use of the spare material – consider crafting a few fashionable scatter cushions with the less worn areas of the material, or you can use smaller scraps of material to make trendy hair scrunchies. Finally, for the bits of material that have seen better days, you can cut them down into cleaning cloths. Who knows, you might find out that you have a natural talent for re-purposing old fabrics!

It’s a shame to see a quality set of sofa covers go to waste, so here at Cover My Furniture, we’re all for people finding clever and unique ways to reuse their old sofa covers.
