4 creative ways to style your small sofa

1st December 2023

Small sofas are firm favourites here in the UK, and no wonder – they have an unmatched ability to add texture, colour and comfort to a space. For all their advantages though (their compact nature of course being quite a big one), they can be surprisingly hard to style – sometimes more than you’d expect.

Here at Cover My Furniture, we’re a family business with more than 60 years of experience to our name in supplying fitted sofa covers, so our experts have more than a few ideas for how you can get started styling your sofa. Here are four of our favourites!

Calming monochrome

When you hear the word monochrome, there’s a good chance you’re probably thinking of a black and white colour scheme And it’s true, a black sofa can be very striking and dramatic, whereas a white one can be very calming and pristine (although you have to have the right kind of environment for it – children and pets can be notoriously disrespectful of white shades).

You may be glad to hear though – monochrome doesn’t technically have to mean black and white. In the strictest definition, all it refers to is the use of one single base colour in varying tones, shades, saturations and hues. Whatever colour you choose, that can make it supremely calming – and what’s more, you don’t have to worry about any bold contrasts fighting for your attention. That’s a perfect option when you prefer your living room to be a place of peace and tranquillity, where you go to relax. You can vary it up with different textures, which can give the place a nice sense of depth without making it look too busy.

Minimalist styles, intriguing textures

Of course, to some people the idea of having too many competing textures might not appeal so much, even when tempered with a calming monochrome scheme. If you’re firmly in that camp, then one good idea to consider is keep the number of textures limited too. Rather than adding several different ones to keep a sense of variety, instead you can just pick a single favourite fabric for your cushion (whether that’s shaggy, or ribbed, or velvety smooth), and perhaps a throw as well.

It’s an excellent choice if you have a statement sofa, as it can enhance its style while still letting the sofa itself take centre stage.

Bold, dramatic shades

We’ve already touched on how black can often be considered quite a dramatic colour, above. And if you’re looking to add a touch of drama to your interiors, you’ve certainly got no shortage of options. Here at Cover My Furniture for example, we’ve got a wide range of fabrics to choose from, such as Everyday Velvet in Ruby or Royal, all perfect for enhancing your living room with bold, striking colours. Don’t forget that different colour families tend to have different effects on our perceptions of a space – warm colours like orange and yellow tend to infuse a space with energy, whereas cooler colours like blue and green tend to be seen as more calming influences.

It’s all about luxury

If you love your living room to be a place of indulgence and luxury (and let’s be honest, who doesn’t?), then it’s definitely worth considering styling your sofa as such. The colour of your sofa fabric can play a major role in that – deep purple shades are the colours that we most strongly associate with luxury, having been symbolic of royalty and nobility throughout centuries of human history. That can serve as your baseline – and then you can add further luxurious touches with sumptuous cushions and throws, making it the perfect place to sink into at the end of a long day at work.

Those are just a few ideas to get you started – you may well have a couple of your own! If you’re on the lookout for more inspiration, you can find plenty right amongst our blogs.
