4 useful ways to make your sofa even more comfortable

30th March 2022

The sofa is arguably the single most important bit of furniture in your living room.

That means you’ll want it to be stylish, big enough for friends and family, and most importantly of all, comfortable! There’s a number of fantastic ways you can improve the comfort of your sofa – for example, keeping your furniture fresh and up to date with accessories like cushions and throws.

As experts with sofa covers and interiors here at Cover My Furniture, you can always trust us to provide a few tips on how to keep your furniture in fantastic condition, as well as how to give it an extra boost in comfort. So, here are our four most crucial ones!

Comfy cushions

Nothing beats the humble cushion. They’re a great addition to any living room space, adding an extra layer of comfort to your sofa, while also offering useful support for your head, legs and back. Generally, the widely accepted consensus is that two to four cushions is best for an average two seater sofa, but of course that’s just a guideline. You can have one, or as many as five or six. Really, the world’s your oyster – it’s all about whatever’s most comfortable for you!

What’s more, they come in a range of different styles, shapes, and textures to suit any style of living room. No matter your style, you’re sure to find a design that suits you. Try adding some colour to a neutral sofa by throwing on a few cushions to contrast nicely with the restrained colour palette (perfect for a contemporary space), or really make a statement by adding a few with a vibrant tone that really pops.

Bring in the blankets

Throws, Sherpas, blankets – whatever kind of covering you’d like for your sofa, it’s almost never a bad choice. The fluffier, the better! With the right kind of blanket, you can turn your sofa into a veritable oasis of warmth and cosiness – you’ll be desperate to get home and snuggle up under it.

As an extra bonus, blankets and throws are some of the easiest ways to elevate your interiors, and bring an inviting dash of colour to your living space. There’s nothing better than being welcomed home by a luxurious throw. They’re particularly valuable throughout the chillier autumn and winter seasons, and a vital part of your sofa’s overall autumn style.

Select your sofa filling

As you probably don’t need us to tell you – the filling you choose for your sofa makes a big difference to how comfortable you’ll find it. Sofa fillings can be broken down into three categories that we refer to as the three Fs: foam, feather, and fibre.

Starting with foam filling. It’s relatively comfortable, and provides a nice firm support that keeps its shape well, even after extended use. When choosing a foam filled sofa though, it’s worth bearing in mind that low-density foam has a bit more give to it, where as high-density foam has more of a springy feel to it. Each can be a great choice for those looking for a low maintenance filling, as they only need to be turned over occasionally to keep the foam from losing its shape too much.

Fibre, on the other hand, gives you more of a ‘sink in’ feeling. Blown fibre offers a super-soft feel, whereas pocket fibre is a bit bouncier. Fibre filling is usually made from polyester trimmings, but it does require a little bit more upkeep than foam filling. We’d recommend a regular plumping after every evening to help keep your sofa comfy. This will also help to maintain its shape.

Finally, we come to feather. Feather filling is by far the most comfortable sofa filling available, with duck feathers making up the majority of feather filled sofas. However, this extra comfort does come with a cost, as feather sofas do tend to require the most maintenance, with regular plumping and the occasional extra filling required to keep your cushions at their comfiest.

They’re all good options, it’s just up to you how much time you’re willing to commit to maintaining your cushions!

Keep on top of your covers

Everything we’ve talked about so far makes a big difference to how comfortable your sofa feels – but if your sofa covers themselves end up looking too stained or worn, it can really limit your ability to properly relax and enjoy everything you’ve worked for. Let’s be honest, it’s difficult to feel fully at ease on a sofa or couch that’s covered in marks and stains, no matter how cosy its cushions are.

That’s where we can help right here at Cover My Furniture – we supply bespoke, made to measure copy covers, and slip covers to keep your sofa looking homely and full of life.
