4 useful ways to maximise space in smaller interiors

8th June 2021

Let’s be honest, there are a lot of benefits to having smaller interiors. They’re faster and often easier to clean, and almost everything is literally within arm’s reach, so if you fancy just settling down of an evening, you never have to move too far from your sofa if you don’t want to.

Having said all that though, there are naturally just times when you might want a little more breathing room, and that can be a tricky feat to manage in smaller environments. Now, one easy way that you can make the space seem visually more open is by choosing lighter and airier colours for your fabrics and loose sofa covers, such as Aquaclean Textured Plain – Chalk. So, whether you’re looking for tips like this to make your space appear more open, or you want to actually clear yourself some usable space, you might find these tips helpful!

Choose your furniture to fit the space

You don’t need to be an expert interior designer to know that your sofa is one of the single biggest elements that’s ever going to be in your living room, so it’s probably the first thing you should be looking at if you’re short on space. Could it be moved anywhere more convenient? Or is it even worth downsizing your sofa for the sake of being able to move around more easily?

Of course, trading in your existing sofa doesn’t necessarily mean downgrading. For example, you could look at melding your new sofa into the existing space – such as by choosing a corner sofa to fit into slightly more awkward spaces. That way, you don’t have to sacrifice any comfort, while at the same time giving yourself and your family more room to move around more freely.

If a corner sofa isn’t workable, a good general rule of thumb is to try and choose pieces with small or medium dimensions. That enables you to change the dimensions of the room over time, whether you’re doing so on a whim, or in response to changes in the house – for example, newly arriving pets or babies, or departing teenagers.

Give your furniture a leg up

It’s not unusual for modern living spaces to feature ‘skirted’ sofas and chairs – furniture whose legs are covered by a flap of fabric that reaches almost all the way to the floor. While there’s no denying that skirted sofas and chairs can look fantastic in a wide variety of interiors, in smaller spaces they can look blockier and more solid, possibly looking like they’re taking up more space than they really are.

If you feel that’s what’s happening in your living room, why not try giving your furniture some fresh legs? By choosing furniture with straight legs and clean lines, you can really help to open the space up visually, giving it all a much breezier feel (especially welcome in Summer!). There’s a reason that this style is so strongly associated with the Scandi style, which by the way is very much on trend for 2021.

Choose versatile solutions and maximise your storage

As with any area where space is at a premium, one of your biggest priorities is always going to be storage. Thankfully, you’ve got no shortage of options on that score! Cube units are an increasingly popular option in modern and contemporary areas, as they can be used to store all manner of bits-and-bobs, odds and ends, and even (dare I say), knick-knacks. You can place them up against a free section of wall to keep them out of the way, or even use them as handy room dividers for open-plan rooms.

Another good way to maximise space in your room is by choosing versatile pieces of furniture that can fulfil multiple roles – for example a sofa with built-in storage, or a hollow ottoman that allows you to conceal clutter. You don’t even have to have furniture that’s specially designed for a specific purpose – a humble footstool can be alternately used as an extra seat if you have company, or even a small makeshift table for snacks or meal-trays. Obviously though, if you’re considering this last one then make sure you account for pets, children, or even wandering adults!

Those are just a few ideas to get you started – there are plenty more specific solutions out there for you to discover!
