How to prepare your living room for guests this Christmas

17th December 2021

After largely missing out on the festivities last year, Christmas 2021 looks a little uncertain again as things stand. But if you do indeed decide to host some seasonal soirees this Christmas, then you need to ensure your living room is ready to receive guests. From purchasing new sofa covers to creating a logical flow and clearing the clutter, here are our top tips for preparing your living room for guests this Christmas.

Get the temperature right

Although it’s tempting to crank the heating up when you’re due to receive guests, you actually need to make sure your living room is cool before the party starts. If not, it will soon become stuffy and hot when body temperature is added; particularly if your guests are wearing seasonal knitwear. I’d suggest either leaving the thermostat be, or even turning the thermostat to a setting that’s a couple of degrees cooler than usual. If the mercury later drops to become a bit chilly, you can always turn it up a touch.

Embrace minimalism

If you leave items laying around your living room, then the space can sometimes end up looking cluttered, fussy and uninviting. So, before your party, carry out a deep clean and embrace a bit of minimalism if you can! There’s still plenty of space in your living area for your Christmas decorations and those beloved photos of the grandkids, but all magazines, loose books and stray coasters should be firmly tucked out of sight. Your space will be much more welcoming for it, and as a bonus it can mean there are fewer things to get knocked over.

Add festive and welcoming touches

From scented candles to wall art and elegant rugs, there are lots of ways you can make your living room more cosy and welcoming this winter.

However, as you may have guessed already, we’re a big fan of using sofa covers to reinvent your space and make it appear much more warming and welcoming. Old, tired sofas can be uncomfortable and unpleasant to use. But sofa covers provide a quick and easy way to rejuvenate your sofa, giving it a fresh new look and getting rid of any unappealing marks or stains.

Best of all, if your sofa gets stained this Christmas, then there’s no need to stop your party and the fun. Afterwards, simply remove it, wash it and replace it. Your loose sofa covers will look as good as new again when the New Year rolls around.

Create a flow

Your living room might be cosy and snug the way it currently sits. However, this setup might not be the best if you’re hosting a party because it can create cliques, which can sometimes lead to a bit of awkwardness (or even outright hostility if there’s pre-existing drama – let’s be honest, sometimes Christmas can be like that!)

If you want people to be able to interact, then take a look at your living room from a number of different angles. If you’re blocking off access routes and lines of sight, you could have a problem getting guests to mingle. Thankfully, moving the odd chair or sideboard can work wonders and these items are easy to put back the next morning before you get furniture marks on the carpet.

These are just a few of our suggestions, but you may have one or two ideas of your own. We’re happy to leave the creative stuff to you! However, if you’re searching for an excellent range of sofa and chair covers in a wide variety of colours, then you’ve come to the right place.
