Our quick guide to cushion infills

11th May 2022

As important as it is to ensure that you pick out the right sofa and chair covers for your living room’s centrepiece, the aesthetic isn’t the only thing that needs to be taken into account when you’re trying to create the perfect sofa space.

Comfort is a key aspect when trying to achieve the perfect sofa feeling, and the kind of comfort your sofa provides is very much reliant on the choice you make when it comes to the filling you put in it.

Here at Cover my Furniture, our cushion infills are broken down into three distinct categories that we refer to as the three Fs: foam, feather, and fibre. Here’s a bit of information on each.

Foam seat cushions

So, let’s start out with foam filling. It’s a relatively comfortable choice, and provides a nice firm support that keeps its shape well, even after many uses. The low-density foam has a bit more give to it when compared to other infill options, whereas high-density foam has more of a springy feel to it. It’s a great choice for those looking for a low maintenance filling, since it only need to be turned over occasionally to keep the foam from sinking inward too much.

It’s an easy to manage option that requires little maintenance, and each of our foam cushion infills come wrapped in dacron and stockinette, and are provided with a domed top and base for an extra plump look.

Rolled and blown fibre seat cushions

Rolled fibre cushion infills give you more of a ‘sink in’ feeling. They’re softer to sit on than foam and not quite as expensive as feather infills, but they do require a bit of maintenance (regular plumping) but it’s worth it for the extra comfort. As a bonus, all of our rolled fibre cushions are made with an FR corovin cloth as standard.

Much like our rolled fibre, our blown fibre cushion infills are softer than foam and slightly less costly than feather. Offering a super-soft feel, the fibre filling is usually made from polyester trimmings, but it does require a little bit more upkeep than foam filling. We’d recommend a regular plumping after every evening to help keep your sofa comfy. This will also help maintain the shape of your sofa.

The shredded fibres give them a feather like squash, and all our rolled fibre cushions are also made with an FR corovin cloth as standard.

Feather seat cushions

This is by far the most comfortable sofa filling available on the market. Our 100% duck feather cushion infills are the gold standard when it comes to sofa comfort. They offer a soft, light and luxurious alternative to foam and fibre, and make for ideal back cushions. They’re absolutely worth the slightly higher price tag. Due the softness of the feathers, they do require a tad more maintenance, with regular plumping and the occasional extra filling required to keep your cushions at their comfiest.

They’re all fantastic options that are worth considering when deciding on the best cushion infill for your sofa, and they all come with a 1 year no-quibble guarantee!
