How to transition your living room from summer to autumn without redecorating

3rd September 2026

At Cover My Furniture, we spend a lot of time thinking about what makes a living room work. It comes with the territory when you’ve spent over 60 years helping people transform their sofas with bespoke fitted covers!Β

From fabrics and colours to the wider interior trends shaping our homes, we know you don’t always need to make dramatic changes to make a room feel completely different.

That’s especially true as we move from summer into autumn. You might find yourself craving a space that feels warmer, cosier and a little more inviting for evenings spent indoors, but that doesn’t mean reaching for the paintbrush or replacing the furniture you already love.

In fact, one of our favourite interior trends at the moment is the move towards homes that feel more collected, personal and lived-in, with beautiful pieces brought together over time rather than everything looking perfectly coordinated.

So, before you contemplate a complete redecoration, here are five ways we’d transition a living room for autumn using much of what you already have.

1. Embrace the lived-in look

If there’s one interiors trend we’re very happy to see gaining momentum, it’s the return of the lived-in home. For a while, perfectly styled spaces dominated our inspiration boards, but the rooms we find ourselves drawn to now have a little more personality. Think books that are actually read, artwork collected over the years, family photographs, beautiful ceramics and furniture that doesn’t necessarily belong to one perfectly matching set.

Autumn lends itself particularly well to this slightly fuller approach to decorating. Bring a few favourite books back onto your coffee table, rearrange artwork and photographs or display pieces that have a story behind them rather than leaving surfaces completely bare. The trick is not to fill every available space, but to create a room that feels considered without feeling overly styled. After all, there’s a big difference between a beautifully curated home and one that looks as though nobody is allowed to touch anything!

2. Rethink the layout of your space

Have you ever noticed how differently you use your living room during summer? Our attention naturally turns towards windows, open patio doors and the garden, with the room itself often becoming somewhere we pass through rather than somewhere we settle down for the evening. Once autumn arrives, that focus moves back indoors, so it makes sense for your furniture to follow.

Rather than buying anything new, try experimenting with what you already have. Angling an armchair towards the sofa, bringing seating slightly closer together or moving a side table within easy reach can make the room feel noticeably more intimate.Β

We particularly love creating smaller areas within a larger living room, perhaps with a favourite chair and lamp becoming a reading corner or two pieces of seating positioned for conversation. These are little changes, but they really do help make a room look and feel noticeably β€˜different’ without much effort.

3. Mix your materials rather than matching them

One of the easiest ways to give a living room that beautifully layered, established feel is to stop worrying about everything matching. When you’re looking at fabrics and interiors, it’s often the contrast between different materials that makes a scheme interesting. A tactile upholstered sofa alongside a smooth wooden table, polished metal against a more rustic finish or a contemporary piece of furniture beside something antique can create far more depth than repeating the same finishes throughout the room.

Before buying anything new, it’s worth looking elsewhere in your home too. That side table sitting in the hallway or lamp that has spent the summer in the spare room might be exactly what your living room needs. Moving pieces between rooms can help you to experiment with different combinations and, during autumn especially, those layers of contrasting materials can make a space feel richer and more established without needing to introduce an obvious seasonal colour palette.

4. Bring your lighting down a level

Lighting becomes so much more important once the long summer evenings start disappearing, and it can completely change the atmosphere of a room without changing the dΓ©cor itself. If you tend to rely on your main ceiling light, autumn is a good time to give table lamps and floor lamps a try.

For autumn, we love lighting that creates smaller pools of warmth around a room rather than illuminating everything equally. It’s amazing how different the same living room can look depending on how you light it. Sometimes it isn’t the room itself that needs changing at all, but simply how everything in it is being seen.Β

Softer lighting and autumn go hand in hand. It makes colours look richer, brings out the texture in your fabrics and furniture, and makes entire spaces feel warmer and more inviting almost instantly.

Think about how your living room feels with the main ceiling light switched on compared with an evening when you’ve got a couple of lamps glowing beside the sofa. It’s the same furniture and the same dΓ©cor, but the atmosphere is completely different!Β

Try swapping cooler white bulbs for warmer ones and make more use of table and floor lamps to spread that softer light around the room. Dimmable bulbs are brilliant too, as you can gradually lower the lighting as the evening draws in and create that lovely cosy feeling without changing anything else in the room.

5. Make one change that transforms the whole room

There’s plenty you can do with what you already have at home, but sometimes one carefully chosen change can take your space to the next level. It’s far more manageable of a task and, if you’re clever with how you style the space around it, can have just as much impact as a full redecoration.

Naturally, we’d start with the sofa! As one of the largest pieces of furniture in the room, changing its colour or texture can have a surprisingly big impact on how the whole space feels.

Our made-to-measure fitted sofa covers are bespoke to your existing furniture, allowing you to completely change its look while keeping the sofa you already love. For autumn, we’re particularly drawn to fabrics with plenty of texture. A chunky weave can bring a relaxed, tactile feel to the room, while a luxurious velvet adds softness and a little more depth as the evenings draw in.

Colour can make just as much difference. Rather than automatically reaching for traditional autumnal oranges and browns, look at the shades already present in your room and choose something that complements them. Rich greens, warm neutrals, earthy reds and deeper blues can all create a cosier feel without making your living room look overly seasonal.

And, because our covers are removable and machine washable, the change doesn’t have to be permanent. When spring comes around, you can swap them for something lighter or simply return to a previous favourite!
