Our top tips for creating a minimalist space
Sleek, soothing, stylish and oh so calming, minimalism has been a popular interior style amongst many homeowners for years and it doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon. It’s tidy, easy to achieve, and for the most part very affordable, so it’s easy to see why this style has taken the world by storm.
We’re big fans of minimalist spaces here at Cover My Furniture, and having spent decades supplying bespoke sofa covers to our customers, we know exactly what it takes to create the perfect minimalist living room. So, to help you out, we’ve devised a list of the key features of minimalism that you need to focus on when trying to create the perfect Scandinavian inspired set-up.
Keep your colour palette limited
You’ve heard the saying less is more, right? This interior style is an excellent example of that. When building a minimalist aesthetic, you want to stick to one neutral colour as the main shade in your space and then have maybe two or three accent shades also in a neutral palette. Whites, greys, beige and taupe all make great choices for a minimalist space. If you’re unwilling to part with colour, don’t worry; you can have any colour you like; we’d just say use it as an accent colour and opt for a lighter or even pastel version of your preferred colour to keep everything subdued and calming.
Take stock of your items while decluttering
Everyone accumulates items, trinkets and other bits and bobs over time; it’s hard not to. But if things have sentimental value or are just genuinely useful, you don’t have to get rid of them in the name of minimalism. True minimalism is a space that looks and feels calming and peaceful, but that doesn’t mean it has to be empty. Start by looking around your space and making a note of everything you maybe don’t want on show 24/7 but definitely want to keep; these are the items you’re going to put in storage so they can be neatly tucked away. You’ll probably also come across a ton of things you don’t want anymore, so just pop them in a donate pile; anything that’s no good can be put in the bin. The aim is to whittle down your knick-knacks into just the things you truly want to keep.
Camouflage your storage
Cupboards and sideboards are great for minimalist interiors because you can close the doors, and what’s out of sight is out of mind! However, if you have a bookshelf or even just regular shelves that are looking a little busy and you’re wondering how you can make them feel slightly more minimalist without moving too many things around, simply camouflage them.
What we mean by this is to stack your books according to size and colour; you can even wrap the brighter covers in more neutral book sleeves so everything matches—it’s up to you. For any trinkets you currently have out on open shelves, you can use different boxes that match the aesthetic and colour of your living room to neatly store them—it just gives everything a more uniform look but does not require any more space.
Keep furniture sleek and simple
When it comes to furniture, the best tips we can give you are clean lines and neutral colours. You also want to be a bit more selective when it comes to your furniture; since you’re going for quality over quantity, you can spend a little more on the items you really want instead of spreading the cost on items that aren’t going to contribute to your space.
Choose decor that serves a purpose, like multi-functional furniture, such as a footstool that also doubles as storage or a nesting table. And, of course, it goes without saying that your furniture also needs to follow the same colour scheme rules that we’ve applied to the rest of your space. Keep it nice and neutral and you’ll have a beautiful minimalist space in no time!
And don’t worry if your sofa doesn’t exactly fit the neutral colour scheme you’ve picked out, that’s where we can help here at Cover My Furniture – we’ve been crafting bespoke, made to measure fitted sofa covers to suit any style for over 60 years. Plus, we also offer a unique range of beautiful neutral armchair covers, to help you bring a new lease of life to your single seaters.
